Dwip Unnayan Songstha (DUS) is an NGO based on the island of Hatiya in the district of Noakhali in the South of Bangladesh. DUS was established initially to give humanitarian assistance to local people in the weak of natural disaster after the devastating cyclone storm in 1970 and continued during the 1970's to support an increasing number of people who were made homeless by sporadic erosion of the island. DUS assisted with reconstruction work following the man made disasters of the post liberation war period and worked activity during later famine of 1974.
In the 1980's DUS strengthened its capacity as a development organisation and worked selectively in the fields of economic security-education-health and land reform.

Hatiya is a severely sister prone island in the coastal district of Noakhali in Bangladesh. Lives are continued vulnerable to cyclone, tidal surge and river bank erosion. It results in assetless majority and extreme poor, illiterate, unhealthy and malnourished- especially women and children and keeps them far away from modern civilization.
DUS works with them and reflects to have a positive change in their lives by means of optimum utilization of local resources as well as potentiality & hidden humane power they hold in. DUS believes, sustainable development process can not be retained with out physical and economic soundness, which includes social empowerment, and hence it is the fundamental focus of all DUS activities.
DUS upholds highly committed, competent and serious professionals who are dedicates to accomplish desired development aspiration through practicing the process of learning and sharing of knowledge.

DUS believes in working locally at grass roots level and that this strategy will contribute to the nation building process. Poverty and the empowerment of the rural poor are therefore at the nucleus of the DUS vision.
